Jardin de la Esperanza
Public Art / Activation
We were invited by Las Mujeres en Movimiento to collaborate on the groundbreaking of their El Jardin de la Esperanza project and the ceremony for welcoming Little Amal.
This future garden will be a space of community and belonging, highlighting and advocating for the rights of women refugees fleeing violence
Our piece is inspired by women in movement and the movement between boundaries.
We first marked the space with a vivid blue wall to frame the garden’s ground breaking. Then, inspired by the Mexican tradition of sawdust carpets, we visualized this story by creating a temporary pattern on the ground of the garden as a canvas for movement.
On the day of the ceremony this canvas was activated by the steps and motions of the Calpulli dance group and Little Amal as they planted the first tree of the garden. The mixing of the colored sawdust is a blessing of the land and represents the blurring of before and after.
Jardin de la Esperanza will be a space of community and belonging, highlighting and advocating for the rights of women refugees fleeing violence.
